Star Magic's rising star Julia Barretto will no longer do the television remake of Cofradia, her supposed launching teleserye in the Kapamilya network.
According to a report in Philstar.com, ABS-CBN decided not to push through with the project. Cofradia, a novel by Dominador Ad Castillo, was first remade in a film starring veteran actress Gloria Romero in 1953, followed by another movie topbilled by Gina Alajar in 1973.
Cofradia is supposed to feature Julia as a girl who is afraid to fall in love because of her dark complexion, but will eventually transform into a beautiful young lady through the help of a magic candle.
There has been no information yet on why ABS-CBN decided to cancel Cofradia but netizens speculated that this might be caused by early criticisms about the concept of the show. According to some, Cofradia is gearing towards racism and will instill the thought that real beauty only belongs to the fair-skinned.
Although Cofradia is a no for Julia, her fans should not worry because ABS-CBN is cooking up a replacement show that will be very much suited for the image she's projecting and the career path she is taking.
The story conference for the new show of Julia Barretto is scheduled on July 7.
