Rachel Donaire Pregnant, Nonito to Become a Father

Posted on January 14, 2013 | 10:15 AM

Filipino boxing champion Nonito Donaire Jr. is soon to become a father as his wife, Rachel Donaire is already 3 months pregnant. The Filipino Flash and his wife first confirmed the good news on ABS-CBN morning show Umagang Kay Ganda, January 14.

Nonito Donaire and wife Rachel

Nonito said that above all the awards and glories he had received in 2012—including Fighter of the Year recognition from several sports institutions—the news of Rachel's pregnancy is the best.

"Pero meron pa pong pinakamalaki pang [balita] kesa sa lahat ng nakuha ko sa 2012… For me, I've achieved what most fighters na nakuha, parang nabalewala iyon akin nang sinabi sa akin ng wife ko na I'm going to be a father," he said in a Skype interview from his residence in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Speculations that Nonito's wife is pregnant surfaced after the boxing champ went back to the Philippines alone after his victory from Jorge Arce.

"Tinanong sa akin last time kung meron ng baby, I was trying to not say it because we wanted to make sure. Kaya nga right now I'm telling you guys because I wanna let you guys know first," clarified Donaire.

Both Rachel and Nonito wanted a baby boy as their first baby but the latter added that regardless of the gender, the health of the kid is more important.

As an expectant father, Nonito wanted to be with Rachel's side in every tests concerning the pregnancy. There might also be a chance that he will cancel a fight to attend to the needs of his pregnant wife. Nonetheless, Donaire said that there are three possible fights already lined up for him this year, with the first taking place sometime between March and April.

Nonito Donaire is Ring Magazine's 2012 'Fighter of the Year'

Posted on December 31, 2012 | 10:12 PM

Four-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. is voted as The RING Magazine’s 2012 Fighter of the  Year. The Filipino Flash's impressive wins this year sealed for him one of boxing's most-coveted titles.

The award is another feather to Nonito Donaire's cap as he was also hailed ESPN's "Boxer of the Year" a few days ago.

Nonito Donaire is Ring Magazine's 2012 'Fighter of the Year'

Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 knockouts) garnered 55.2% of the votes in RingTV.com's year-end poll to capture a landslide win over closest competitor to the title, Juan Manuel Marquez, who received only 27.3% of the votes.

Ring Magazine editor Doug Fischer said that Marquez may have scored the Knockout of the Year in the Fight of the Year by icing his arch rival Manny Pacquiao in the sixth round, but fight fans recognized Donaire accomplishing more than the Mexican legend inside and outside the ring.

Among those elite fighters – those precious few who fans and boxing media view as the pound-for-pound best, seldom fight more than twice a year – Donaire was the busiest this year.

"The 30-year-old veteran fought four times in 2012 and in the process of doing so the former flyweight and bantamweight titleholder established himself as the best 122-pound fighter on the planet, as well as the Fighter of the Year in the eyes of the fans who took part in RingTV.com’s year-end awards poll," Fischer reported.

Just like ESPN's Dan Rafael, Fischer also commended Donaire for being the only high-profile professional boxer who is willing to commit to comprehensive year-round drug testing conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).

Nonito Donaire Hailed ESPN "Boxer of the Year"

Posted on December 26, 2012 | 7:24 PM

The Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire Jr. was hailed as the 2012 "Boxer of the Year" by ESPN.com. The "Boxer of the Year" title was previously held by Andre Ward and has been won three times by People's Champ Manny Pacquiao (2006, 2008 and 2009).

Nonito Donaire is ESPN's Boxer of the Year

"It might sound strange, but no, Manny Pacquiao was not the best fighter from the Philippines in 2012,” wrote ESPN’s Dan Rafael. "That honor goes to 'The Filipino Flash,' junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire, who had a year for the ages."

Rafael said that Donaire has been an easy pick as ESPN's 2012 "Boxer of the Year," having won with great fashion four of his fights this year.

In February, "The Filipino Flash" moved up to the 122-pound division and captured the vacant WBO super bantamweight title by beating Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. by split decision at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

In July, Donaire knocked off the IBF belt holder, Jeffrey Mathebula at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, the same venue when he stopped Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka via a round 9 TKO in October, successfully defending his IBF and WBO super bantamweight belts.

Nonito Donaire put an exclamation point to his credentials this year after knocking out Jorge Arce in third round in their December 15 fight at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Nonito Donaire was also commended for being the first and only boxer in the world to undergo random drug testing with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on a year-round basis.

Donaire edged out Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez (who floored Pacquiao a week before Donaire knocked out Arce) as "Boxer of the Year." Nonito also beat other contenders for the award which include fellow Pinoy Brian Villoria, Danny Garcia, Robert Guerrero, Leo Santa Cruz, Andre Ward and Carl Froch.

Jorge Arce Announces Retirement After Loss to Donaire

Posted on December 16, 2012 | 12:42 PM

Mexican champion Jorge "El Travieso" Arce announced his retirement from boxing to take care of his family and children. Arce suffered a 3rd round knockout from "The Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire Jr. during their fight held at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, December 15.

Jorge Arce leaves the boxing ring with 61 wins and 7 losses

The 33-year-old Jorge Arce said in a post fight interview that he promised his children that he will retire as soon as he lost a fight. His loss to Nonito Donaire led to that decision, but the Mexican can walk away with his head held high.

Jorge Arce, who hails from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico had championed 61 professional fights in his boxing career, earning world titles in four weight divisions. He became pro at the age of 16.

Arce's last fight prior to his loss to Donaire was with Mauricio Gonzales of Panama held in his hometown in Mexico. Arce leaves the ring with 61 wins (46 KOs), 7 losses and 2 draws.

Donaire vs Arce Results: Donaire Wins Via a 3rd Round Knockout

Dubbed as D-Day (Demolition Day), the Nonito Donaire Jr vs Jorge Arce battle was held on December 15 (December 16 in Manila) at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Nonito Donaire won via a 3rd round knockout, beating the Mexican.

Donaire vs Arce

Nonito Donaire clearly dominated the fight scoring a knock down over Arce from a quick short right hand in round 2. Donaire ducks a punch in round 3 and floored Arce again. The shaky Arce stood up but he was welcomed with a monster left hook from Donaire, landing right on his jaw and he's down--end of the fight.

Jorge "El Travieso" Arce is Donaire's fourth world class opponent this year.

Nonito Donaire's record improved to 31-1-0, 20 KOs while Jorge Arce's record now goes 61-7-2, 46 KOs. With Donaire's spectacular win, he might be a candidate for "Fighter of the Year," putting an exclamation point to his credentials this year.

An even bigger 2013 awaits Donaire, who is now up in the pound-for-pound ranking. According to bleacher report, "superfights are still waiting for him at 122 in Abner Mares and Guillermo Rigondeaux. If he chooses to move up to 126, he's got great potential fights in opponents like Orlando Salido, Daniel Ponce de Leon and Billy Dib."

AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 Semifinals (Azkals vs Singapore) 2nd Leg Game Result: Azkals Loses to Singapore, 1-0

Posted on December 13, 2012 | 8:34 AM

The second leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals: Philippine Azkals versus Singapore Lions happened Wednesday night, December 12 at Singapore's Jalan Besar Stadium. The game ended with Singapore winning over the Philippine Azkals (1-0) to book its place to the finals of the annual cup.

AFF Suzuki Cup Semifinals (Azkals vs Singapore) 2nd Leg Game Result: Singapore Lions Beats Philippine Azkals, 1-0

The Lions' Khairul Amri gave the Singapore team a goal early in the game at the 19th minute. The Lions were aggressive for much of the first half before the Azkals started to boost minutes before the halftime. Phil Younghusband attempted to equalize the goal at the 41st minute but the strike changed direction.

The Philippine Azkals tried to control the tempo in the second half with goal attempts from Chieffy Caligdong and Dennis Cagara but to no avail. Demit Omphroy and Dennis Wolf also came in but Singapore played defense firmly.

The game ended with a score of 1-0, and Singapore's lone goal paved them the way to the cup finals. A 1-1 draw would have sent the Azkals into the finals due to the away goal rule as the two played to a scoreless draw last December 8 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium during the semifinals' 1st leg. The Azkals, however failed to find the equalizer needed for them to capture their first finals appearance ever.

In the AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 Finals, the Singapore Lions will be playing the winner of the other semifinal leg between Thailand and Malaysia.

Mayweather Jr. Wishes Pacquiao Well, Hopes Pacman Can Bounce Back

Posted on December 11, 2012 | 12:18 PM

Floyd Mayweather Jr, deemed as Manny Pacquiao's erstwhile rival offered words of encouragement for the Filipino Champ who suffered a 6th round knockout loss from Juan Manuel Marquez last December 8 (December 9, PHL time).

Erstwhile rival: Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao

In an interview with Ben Thompson for boxing website FightHype.com, Mayweather praised both Pacquiao and Marquez  and wished the former well after that stunning knockout.

"Marquez is a true champion. Manny Pacquiao is a true champion. Both of them went out there and put on a good performance, and that's a good thing for the sport of boxing," Mayweather said. "I wish Pacquiao nothing but the best. I wish he can bounce back and he can recoup from this….You have to really, really dedicate yourself to your craft. I think he's got so many different things on the outside that he worries about, you know. But it was a good thing that he was able to come into the sport, you know, piggyback off my name, and get a bunch of endorsement deals and make a good living. That's a great thing."

Mayweather, who admittedly felt bad for Pacquiao's loss gave the 8-division world champion pieces of advice before the epic battle between him and Manny can ever come into fruition.

"Pacquiao's focus should be trying to take a vacation, get his mind right, and get a few tune-up fights so he can bounce back. I'm not here to talk bad about Pacquiao. I feel bad for him, honestly….There's a difference in the ways you can get knocked out. When you gotta wake a guy up with smelling salts and he got a concussion and he gotta go to the hospital over night, that's crucial. I mean, that's close to the death."

"Hopefully he's [Pacquiao] okay. My prayers go out to the Pacquiao family. I know he loves the sport of boxing, so hopefully he can bounce back," the pound-for-pound and undefeated champion added.

The battle was the fourth time Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez fought on the ring. The first time they got in the ring was in 2004, and that one ended in a draw. The second and third time Pacman and Dinamita met on the ring were in 2008 and 2011, respectively— both ending with a controversial majority decision in Pacquiao's favor.

Chelsea Emata sang the Philippine National Anthem, Lupang Hinirang in a ballad-like fashion while Mexico had the services of Ana Barbara to sing the Himno Nacional Mexicano with the help of the Mexican crowd as she's somewhat lost her voice.

Marquez scored a knock down on the third round while Pacquiao did the same for Marquez at the 5th round. However, a solid right straight connecting into Manny Pacquiao's chin rendered him unconscious—end of the fight.

AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 Semifinals (Azkals vs Singapore) 1st Leg Game Result: 0-0

Posted on December 8, 2012 | 9:54 PM

The first leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals: Philippine Azkals versus Singapore Lions happened Saturday night, December 8 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. The game ended with a final score of 0-0 (a scoreless draw) as both teams failed to score a goal.

AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 Semifinals (Azkals vs Singapore) First Leg

The Philippine Azkals' starting line up include goalkeeper Eduard Sacapaño, Rob Gier, brothers Juani and Angel Guirado and James and Phil Younghusband, Dennis Cagara, Carli de Murga, Jason De Jong, Paul Mulders, and Patrick Reichelt.

The Singapore Lions may have dominated the first half with more goal attempts but the Azkals' Ed Sacapaño has been bailing out the team with awesome saves. The first half ended with both teams scoreless.

The Azkals began pressuring the Lions at the start of second half. Marwin Angeles came in for De Jong early minutes of the second half while Chieffy Caligdong subbed for Reichelt at the 76th minute. The game got to a more physical one during the last few minutes and one player each from both teams got injured—Cagara from the Azkals and Baihakki Khaizan from the Lions.

Singapore had more fouls committed and got three yellow cards while the Azkals earned its own out of Cagara's pushing a rival who held on to his shirt.

The Azkals played with all their heart but failed to play offense, ending to a not so great result. The game however, was not a bad one.

The Philippine Azkals will be playing Singapore Lions for the second leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals on Wednesday, December 12 to be held at Singapore's Jalan Besar Stadium, the Lions' home turf. Because of the away goals rule, the Azkals can advance to the finals of the AFF Suzuki Cup if they hold the Lions to a scoring draw—such as a 1-1 or 2-2 scoreline—in the second leg.

Donaire vs Nishioka Results: Nonito Donaire Wins via Round 9 TKO

Posted on October 14, 2012 | 1:16 PM

The Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire Jr. stopped Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka in the ninth round via technical knockout (TKO) to claim his 30th win at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on October 13. Donaire retained his IBF and WBO super bantamweight belts.

Nonito was totally in control from the start to finish of the fight while Nishioka did not engage much nor establish anything big.

The 29-year-old Donaire floored Nishioka in the 6th round with a left uppercut and his right straight to Nishioka’s jaw totally recked the Japanese's dream of winning his 17th straight win in 8 years.

The fight was deemed lackluster and didn't provide a lot of excitement which can be blamed to Nishioka's reluctance to fight head to head. Donaire is a counter-puncher and his ring partner did not gave what he wanted to elevate the fight to a more defining level.

Nonito Donaire's record improved to 30-1-0, 19 KOs while Nishioka faced his 1st loss after 16 consecutive wins to bring his record to 39-5-3, 24 KOs.

Posted on August 26, 2012 | 11:48 PM

Smart Gilas Pilipinas, the national basketball team won for the country its first William Jones Cup crown since 1998 after beating team USA, 76-75 at the games held in Taipei, Taiwan.

LA Tenorio led the Philippine Team with 20 points, 11 of which were scored in the final quarter. The Filipinos were down 75-74 with only 36 seconds left in the game and it was the jumper of LA Tenorio which pushed a win against the taller American squad.

LA Tenorio was also declared as the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP), as confirmed by Smart Gilas head coach Chot Reyes.

The Philippines was declared the tournament champion after leading the team standings (with a 7-1 card) in the last playing day.  Smart Gilas only bowed to Lebanon in the eight games that the team played in the 2012 cup.

It is the fourth time in the 34 year-old tournament that the country won the Jones Cup, the two others being in 1981 via the Northern Consolidated Cement of American coach Ron Jacobs and in 1985 also under the NCC team that included Allan Caidic and Samboy Lim. The Philippine Centennial team of coach Tim Cone was the country's last win prior to the 2012 championships way back in 1998.

Last year, the Smart Gilas team ended up in third place behind Iran and South Korea.

The 2012 Philippine team is composed mostly of professional players from the PBA namely Enrico Villanueva (Ginebra), Gabe Norwood (Rain or Shine), Gary David (Powerade), Jeff Chan (Rain or Shine), LA Tenorio (Alaska), Larry Fonacier (Talk N Text), Mac Baracael (Alaska), Ranidel De Ocampo (Talk N Text), Sol Mercado (Meralco) and Sonny Thoss (Alaska); naturalized player Marcus Douthit, and non-pros Fil-Am Matt Rosser and San Beda player Garvo Lanete.

Michael Phelps in a Speedo for Louis Vuitton ad

Posted on August 14, 2012 | 7:51 PM

Michael Phelps may have retired from the pool waters but that doesn't mean that he will not wear his Speedo and goggles anymore just like what he did for a Louis Vuitton ad recently.

Michael Phelps was photographed by Annie Leibovitz partially submerged in a bathtub with that  sultry look and beside him atop a towel was the Louis Vuitton duffle bag.

Dubbed as the most successful Olympian of all time with 22 medals, Michael Phelps, 27, also appeared in another LV ad together with Larisa Latynina of Russia, 77, a former gymnast who held the record as the most decorated Olympian for the last 48 years (with 18 medals) until Phelps' performance in the 2012 London Olympics.

Michael Phelps, though already retired from competitive swimming still wanted to grow the said sport more and more. Now being involved in golf, Michael Phelps said that he also wanted to travel after his retirement. If there's any chance that he will compete again in the 2016 Rio Games, Phelps has this to say:

"I've had the opportunity to do something nobody else has ever done before so I'm very happy with that."
