Queen of Disco Donna Summer died Thursday morning, May 17 after battling with cancer. The news was first reported by TMZ, saying that she was in Florida at the time of her death and later confirmed by her family.

In a report by TMZ, a source said that "the singer was trying to keep the extent of her illness under wraps" and says "she didn't seem too bad." It was also reported that Donna Summer was finishing an album before she died. TMZ learned that Donna died from lung cancer and sources told the website that Donna believed she contracted it by inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 attack in New York City.
In an official statement by Donna Summer's family, saying that they "are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy."
"Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith. While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time," the family said in a statement.
Donna Summer won five Grammy Awards and six American Music Awards, and charted three multi-platinum albums. She had numerous hits in both the 1970s and 1980s, including "Last Dance," "She Works Hard for the Money" and "Bad Girls."
Donna Summer is survived by her husband Bruce Sudano, their daughters Brooklyn and Amanda, as well as her daughter Mimi from her previous marriage.
