Pokwang's "A Mother's Story" Wins Best Film at the 2012 MAM Awards

ABS-CBN bagged four awards in the 2012 Migration Advocacy and Media Awards for its programs and movie that promoted and championed the welfare of overseas Filipino workers.

The “Lipad ng Pangarap” episode of “Krusada,” anchored by Henry Omaga-Diaz, won as the Best TV Show (Episodic) that featured various stories of success as as various plights of Filipinos abroad.

“TNT,” on the other hand, was named Best Documentary as it tackled the issue on human trafficking. It was produced by ABS-CBN North America Bureau Chief Nadia Trinidad.

 “A Mother’s Story” starring comedienne Pokwang and directed by John-D Lazatin, won as Best Film while “Bida ang Pasko:  On Duty” created by ABS-CBN Global emerged as Best Advertisement.

The Commission of Filipino Overseas (CFO) launched the MAM Awards in 2011 in celebration of the Month of Overseas Filipino and International Migrants Day in the country.   The awarding ceremonies will be held on Tuesday (Dec. 18) 6 p.m., at the SSS Magsaysay Hall in Quezon City.

Segunda Mano and A Mother's Story Vie to be Philippines' Entry to Oscars 2013

Segunda Mano starring Kris Aquino, Dingdong Dantes and Angelica Panganiban and A Mother's Story topbilled by Pokwang, Rayver Cruz and Xyriel Manabat have been shortlisted to become the Philippine entry to the 85th Academy Awards (Oscars 2013).

The Film Academy of the Philippines, the body which chooses the country's entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Oscars revealed seven films subject for review to follow the footsteps of Ploning, Anak, Noy, Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank and the rest of the films which received the honor of representing the country to the Oscars.

Aside from Segunda Mano and A Mother's Story, other films shortlisted were Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa starring Jean Garcia, Roco Nacino and Paulo Avelino, Gov. ER Ejercito's Manila Kingpin: Asiong Salonga Story, Gwen Zamora's The Witness, Dante Mendoza's Captive starring French actress Isabelle Huppert and Busong of Auraeus Solito who directed once Philippine entry to the Oscars, Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros.

All the shortlisted films were exhibited from October 2011 to July 2012 and have been given an A rating by the Cinema Evaluation Board.

As per Oscar Award rules for the best foreign language film category, a film must have been commercially exhibited for at least seven consecutive days during the period from October 2011 to September 2012 to qualify for the award so it is understood that FAP will still consider A-rated films shown in August and September this year.

'A Mother's Story' Starring Pokwang

Pokwang ventures into a heavy drama movie in her first starring role via A Mothers Story, a family drama film about an illegal immigrant in the United States and her struggles as she achieves legal status. The film deals with what the OFWs go through in the United States. This is the first film produced by The Filipino Channel and distributed by ABS-CBN International and Star CinemaThe film had its premiere in Los Angeles, CA on November 6, 2011 and was shown in selected US cities. It is set to open in Philippine theaters on January 8, 2012.
