ABS-CBN revisits the assassination of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. via a documentary “Agosto Beinte-Uno: Ang Pagpatay kay Ninoy Aquino” airing this Sunday (August 25).
Narrated by the veteran actor Jaime Fabregas, the documentary presents a painstaking research including review of court documents and testimonies of witnesses, analysis on the evidences, and interviews.
Among the interviewees are Atty. Mario Bautista, lawyer of one of the accused in the case, forensic expert Raquel Fortun and former chief of Metrocom Intelligence Group Col. Octavio Alvarez.
It also seeks to sustain the historical significance of Aquino’s assassination as it recedes from memory of the many, specially the youth, nowadays.
Thirty years ago, on August 21, 1983, Ninoy, was allegedly shot by Rolando Galman and killed at Manila International Airport. The tragedy sparked to series of events and protests including the historic EDSA People Power Revolution, which ended former President Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship.
Though the assigned fact-finding commission concluded that the crime was carried out by a military conspiracy, and several people had convicted and jailed, the tragedy remains a mystery as doubts and speculations still exist until now.
Atty. Bautista questioned how did Galman manage to get his gun through airport security. “It was a .357 revolver. If you are an assassin, you’ll never use a huge type of gun,” Bautista insisted.
Aside from the gunshot, another set of questions arose as the autopsy showed a contusion in Ninoy’s skull. “I don’t know whether he was beaten or his head was hit by a blunt object,” Fortun said.
Who really killed or ordered to kill Ninoy? Who had the motive and power to do it? How did the crime happen despite a tight security?
Don’t miss “Agosto Beinte-Uno: Ang Pagpatay kay Ninoy Aquino” this Sunday (Agosto 25), after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.
