Cheche Lazaro Presents: Palibhasa Babae Probes Tough Women on Gov't Offices

Posted on February 28, 2014 | 5:30 PM

Veteran broadcast journalist Che Che Lazaro puts the spotlight on four tough Filipinas in the government— Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, and Internal Revenue Chief Kim Henares— this Sunday (Mar 2) in  “Cheche Lazaro Presents: Palibhasa Babae” in celebration of the International Women’s Month.

All strong-willed lawyers, the four have been earning praises, as well as criticisms for the decisions and judgment calls they have made in their respective offices.

In a sit-down one-on-one interview with Lazaro, Sereno, Morales, de Lima, and Henares share the burdens that comes with their very demanding jobs, the challenges they currently face, and their plans for their respective offices.

Sereno explains why being called a dissenting minority chief justice does not bother her. Morales shows how she instills discipline in the Office of the Ombudsman, while De Lima talks about keeping her independence while being an alter ego of the president. Henares, who has been tirelessly filing tax evasion cases in court, confirms the rumor about how she turned down a request for assistance by a relative of her husband.

The documentary outlines what they need, want to achieve, and how they are coping in the game of people’s perception.

Compared to women in other countries, Filipinas have always enjoyed greater freedom and equal rights with men. They have raised families, managed businesses, served government agencies, and at some point in Philippine history, run the country. While women have always been generally described as vulnerable, the Filipina is also seen as strong, resilient, and able to take on roles often assigned to men.

A must-watch for every Filipino, “Cheche Lazaro Presents: Palibhasa Babae” is not an ordinary story about gender, but a story of a nation revolving under the yoke of corruption and mismanagement, and how four women are trying to address the situation with the help of an enlightened citizenry.

Don’t miss “Cheche Lazaro Presents: Palibahasa Babae” this Sunday (Mar 2), after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.

Disasters Similar to Yolanda Possible Because of Climate Change; Cheche Lazaro Probes in 'Panahon Na'

Posted on January 10, 2014 | 9:05 PM

Broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro probes the vulnerability of the Philippines to climate change and natural disasters in “Cheche Lazaro Presents: Panahon Na” this Sunday (January 12).

Cheche Lazaro Presents: "Panahon Na"

When typhoon Ondoy flooded Metro Manila and neighboring provinces in 2009, people were caught off-guard by what officials called a ‘storm in a hundred years.’ But within a span of a week, typhoon Pepeng lashed at the northern part of Luzon.

The succeeding extreme weather events, not to mention flood-inducing monsoons, just became more intense – Sendong in 2011, Pablo in 2012, and the world’s strongest tropical storm Yolanda just last November.

Because of climate change, weather experts and scientists warn of more apocalyptic disasters that will hit the country similar to typhoon Yolanda. They also claim that the Philippines, the third most vulnerable country to climate change, is more likely to experience the wrath of Mother Earth than any other country in the world.

Cheche interviews scientists, experts, and disaster-reduction managers in the two-hour documentary to identify, assess, and explain the vulnerabilities of various areas in the country. They also discuss what Filipinos can do to prepare and lessen the consequences of climate change.

Don’t miss the initial offering of “Cheche Lazaro Presents” in 2014 this Sunday (January 12), after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.

'Si Ser Chief, Si Maya at ang Teleserye' Airs June 16 on ABS-CBN | Cheche Lazaro Presents

Posted on June 14, 2013 | 11:47 PM

Broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro looks into the enduring fondness of Filipinos for television drama series or teleseryes then and now in another special episode of the documentary “Cheche Lazaro Presents” titled “Si Ser Chief, Si Maya at Ang Teleserye” that airs this Sunday (June 16).

One of the teleseryes that has captured the hearts of viewers is “Be Careful With My Heart.” The series, whose story revolves around a widower and businessman “Richard Lim” or “Ser Chief” and nanny-turned-flight attendant Maya dela Rosa (Jodi Sta. Maria), remains a top-rater since it premiered in July 2012. Ser Chief and Maya’s love story and charming chemistry have captivated audiences, while scenes of the kilig-serye have consistently trended on social media.

“Be Careful With My Heart” has changed the habits of viewers in the country and has also touched viewers abroad through The Filipino Channel. The show’s appeal cuts across ages, gender, social classes and race. In fact, Malaysia’s first commercial TV station, TV 3 has reportedly expressed a strong interest in acquiring the series.

But before “Be Careful With My Heart,” other Kapamilya programs have already made a buzz in the international scene, particulary in Malaysia where “Magkaribal,” “Prinsesa ng Banyera,” “Dahil May Isang Ikaw,” “Impostor,” “Imortal,” “Budoy,” “Iisa Pa Lamang,” and “Mara Clara” have been aired. Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales’ “Pangako Sa’yo,” meanwhile, became a hit in Cambodia.

Aside from Malaysia and Cambodia, some Kapamilya teleseryes were also aired in other Asian countries such as Brunei, Myanmar, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea at Taiwan.

What is it with teleseryes that keeps viewers glued? What do these programs reflect about the entertainment industry and society as a whole?

Don’t miss “Cheche Lazaro Presents: Si Ser Chief, Si Maya at Ang Teleserye” on ABS-CBN this Sunday (June 16), 10:15AM with replays at 11:30PM.
