Disasters Similar to Yolanda Possible Because of Climate Change; Cheche Lazaro Probes in 'Panahon Na'

Posted on January 10, 2014 | 9:05 PM

Broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro probes the vulnerability of the Philippines to climate change and natural disasters in “Cheche Lazaro Presents: Panahon Na” this Sunday (January 12).

Cheche Lazaro Presents: "Panahon Na"

When typhoon Ondoy flooded Metro Manila and neighboring provinces in 2009, people were caught off-guard by what officials called a ‘storm in a hundred years.’ But within a span of a week, typhoon Pepeng lashed at the northern part of Luzon.

The succeeding extreme weather events, not to mention flood-inducing monsoons, just became more intense – Sendong in 2011, Pablo in 2012, and the world’s strongest tropical storm Yolanda just last November.

Because of climate change, weather experts and scientists warn of more apocalyptic disasters that will hit the country similar to typhoon Yolanda. They also claim that the Philippines, the third most vulnerable country to climate change, is more likely to experience the wrath of Mother Earth than any other country in the world.

Cheche interviews scientists, experts, and disaster-reduction managers in the two-hour documentary to identify, assess, and explain the vulnerabilities of various areas in the country. They also discuss what Filipinos can do to prepare and lessen the consequences of climate change.

Don’t miss the initial offering of “Cheche Lazaro Presents” in 2014 this Sunday (January 12), after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.

Broadcast journalist Atom Araullo recounts his harrowing experience during the onslaught of the world’s strongest tropical storm Yolanda that hit Visayas in a special documentary titled “Yolanda” airing this Sunday (December 22) on ABS-CBN.

Atom Araullo braved Typhoon Yolanda

“We were there when the storm was happening, when typhoon Yolanda was kicking. We could see the water rising then we imagined thousands of people getting trapped in their houses,” Atom recalled during his interview in Lynda Jumilla’s program on ANC “Beyond Politics.”

He also described the devastating aftermath of typhoon Yolanda as something that no one could have prepared for because of its incredible magnitude.

“The people were running around… You could hear people sobbing in the darkness, there was no power, there were dead bodies all around, survivors couldn’t get in touch with their loved ones,” he shared.

Aside from recalling his memorable coverage in Tacloban, Atom also shows never-before-seen video footage of the super typhoon’s initial onslaught and images from the crucial hours after the storm.

He also tells the different heartbreaking and inspiring stories of Yolanda victims that showcase the the strength of Filipinos and highlight how the rest of the world united to help the typhoon survivors.

Don’t miss the documentary “Yolanda” this Sunday (December 22), after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.

Perhaps the strongest ever that rampaged across the Philippine archipelago with maximum sustained winds of around 315 kilometers (195 miles) per hour, typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) left over 100 people killed in Leyte while most areas still waiting for updates on casualties according ABS-CBN news.

Officials are still unable to determine exact number of fatalities and injuries because roads were washed out and phone service were down. It was reported that the destruction hit most of the Visayas region in the Philippines.  The storm first roared to Samar, flooding streets, knocking out power and communications. Other provinces hit were Leyte, Iloilo, Oriental Mindoro, Tacloban, Surigao del Norte and Palawan. Hundreds of residents lost their homes In Cebu and Davao Oriental.  Many are expected to be in need of food, water and medicine.

ABS CBN Foundation International announces that it is currently accepting donations to assist in rescue operations and providing aid to families that are now in evacuation centers where they are temporarily sheltered. Contributions can be made to “ABS CBN Foundation International (Typhoon Yolanda)” online at www.abscbnfoundation.org or via checks to 150 Shoreline Drive, Redwood City, CA 94065 or by calling (800)527-2820.

“The aftermath of typhoon Yolanda is expected to be devastating and catastrophic.  After the distribution of relief goods, we will continue to appeal for help so we can rebuild houses, schools and more importantly lives of those who were displaced by the typhoon” says Jo Ann Kyle, Managing Director for ABS CBN Foundation International. “Our volunteer teams are already on the ground, making sure that we leave no one behind.”

As of today, the typhoon is already outside the Philippine area of responsibility and assessment of the damages is ongoing.
