ABS-CBN Teams up with U.P. and REACT for Halalan 2013

Posted on December 13, 2012 | 9:37 AM

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs has partnered with the University of the Philippines system for the country’s first and biggest fact-checking project that will verify candidates’ claims in ABS-CBN’s “Halalan 2013” election forums and coverage, marking the first time a Philippine media organization will use the feature, which is standard in foreign news coverage and election debates.

Ging Reyes, Charo Santos-Concio, Eugenio Lopez III, Alfredo Pascual and Prospero De Vera III at the ABS-CBN-UP MOA signing

Faculty and experts from UP will appear in fact-checking segments to air on ABS-CBN’s TV and online platforms, a part of the collaboration between the network and the university to promote transparency and public participation among voters.

To formalize the partnership, ABS-CBN Chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III, ABS-CBN President and COO Charo Santos-Concio, and ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs Head Ging Reyes, signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with UP President Alfredo Pascual and UP Vice President for Public Affairs, Prospero De Vera III on Wednesday (Dec 5).

Pascual called the partnership a new milestone for UP as it is the first time that the university system has officially partnered with a media organization to provide the media component for the elections.

Santos-Concio said, “We believe UP’s role in nurturing future leaders will be a boon to Halalan 2013’s ‘Tayo Na.’ With the UP system as our partner, ABS-CBN is ever confident and optimistic that the coming elections will again show our citizen journalists at their finest.”

Aside from fact-checking, the MOA will also create projects related to ABS-CBN’s election campaign “Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo: Tayo Na” and voter information drives, including a microsite where overseas Filipino voters can get information on the 2013 elections.

The micro-site will be featured in the websites of all UP units, constituent campuses, and UP Alumni Associations all over the world. It will not only teach voters how to vote but also how to choose among candidates, said Pascual.

Aside from UP, ABS-CBN also signed a partnership with civic organization Regional Emergency Assistance Communications System (REACT) Philippines in gathering election-related news stories, including situational reports in the field from all over the country.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Ging Reyes, ABS-CBN head of newsgathering Chi Almario-Gonzalez, BMPM head Inday Varona were present at the MOA signing last Monday (Nov 3) with Richard Valdes, REACT National Chairman of Government Agencies and Media affairs and Felimon Tutica Jr., REACT National Executive Vice President.

REACT, which gathers and disseminates information to provide assistance during calamities and emergencies, has been ABS-CBN’s partner in news gathering since the 1992 national elections.

Posted on June 14, 2012 | 11:22 AM

Five tertiary schools made it in the Top 300 Asian Universities list of education and career network Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

State-run University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City remains the country’s top school, ranking 68th in Asia. UP is followed by private schools Ateneo de Manila University (86th), De La Salle University (142nd) and University of Santo Tomas (148th). University of Southeastern Philippines in Davao City, a newcomer, made it to the 251-300 bracket.

All four Philippine schools slipped in the Asian University rankings this year. In 2011, UP ranked 62nd in Asia, while Ateneo closely followed at the 65th spot. UST and La Salle ranked 104th and 107th last year, respectively.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is the top Asian University for the second consecutive year, according to QS. National University Singapore ranked second, while University of Hong Kong slipped to third place.

Here is the list of the Top 10 Asian Universities by QS (2012).

1. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
2. National University Singapore
3. University of Hong Kong
4. Seoul National University (South Korea)
5. Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong)
6. Peking University (China)
7. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (South Korea)
8. University of Tokyo (Japan)
9. Pohang University of Science and Technology (South Korea)
10. Kyoto University (Japan)

"Based very loosely on the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in the US, but operated on a much simpler basis, these classifications take into account three key aspects of each university to assign their label: SIZE, FOCUS, RESEARCH INTENSITY, AGE," QS said on its website.
