Cinema One Puts Kathryn and Daniel in the Spotlight this January

Posted on January 20, 2014 | 4:36 PM

Starting things off with today’s hottest teen love team, Cinema One gives a special treat to its viewers with a month-long feature on Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla’s hit movie “Must Be Love”.

Kathniel

Produced by Star Cinema and directed by Dado Lumibao, “Must Be Love” is the first solo film of the teen tandem where they were cast in a leading role, following their appearances as part of star-studded casts in “24/7 in Love” and “Sisterakas”. It was shot in different locations around the Philippines, including Cebu and Laguna—and was even taken abroad to Berlin, Germany.

The film tells the story of two childhood friends, Patricia (Kathryn Bernardo) and Ivan (Daniel Padilla). Growing up together and discovering the changes that come with age, different possibilities open up for the two.

As they get older, Patricia begins to realize that she has feelings for her best friend, but begins to question if he feels the same way. Things get even more complicated when her cousin Angel (Liza Soberano) comes into the picture—and Ivan starts to show interest in a different girl instead.

With the two teen actors in the leading roles, “Must Be Love” served as a benchmark for the two. It even served as a platform for Daniel Padilla’s hit song “Nasa Iyo Na Ang Lahat,” which was the film’s theme song, to skyrocket to the top of the music hit charts.

In a review from pep.ph, the film was labeled as “a welcome alternative to the slew of teen movies and romantic flicks,” setting it apart from what the Filipino audience had grown accustomed to. Writer Jennifer Dugena of the website said, “It is also a perfect teen movie recommended not just for KathNiel fans but also for adults… ‘Must Be Love’ is a rare film that is cute and light as much as it is serious and heavy.”

Don’t miss out on the KathNiel love team in “Must Be Love” airing on Cinema One this month. Catch it on January 18 at 8:00pm, January 24 at 3:00pm, and January 28 at 7:00pm. For updates, visit and like Cinema One on Facebook (www.facebook.com/Cinema1Channel).

Erich Gonzales Reunites with Richard Somes in Mariposa Sa Hawla ng Gabi

Posted on November 30, 2012 | 3:08 PM

After “Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang”, Erich Gonzales stars in another dark and gritty film by acclaimed director Richard Somes, “Mariposa Sa Hawla ng Gabi” that will be screened during the 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival.

Somes admitted that he loved Erich’s acting style, “I thought Erich really suited the lead character of Mariposa and I have already written the script to really suit her personality. The problem was, she became super busy because of her other commitments,” he said.

The director who has worked with Erich thrice was surprised when the seasoned actress informed him that she has received the script and felt ecstatic to do the film. “We talked and she agreed to adjust her schedule to make room for Mariposa,” Somes said.

In Mariposa, Erich will portray a ‘probinsiyana’ who ventures into the city to find her long lost sister. Somes said that this reunion would be fun and easy for both of them since he already knew what Erich is capable of. “Erich will portray a very challenging role here and very different from the ones she has done so far,” he said.

The director mentioned that in the film, Erich skinned a monitor lizard without any hint of fear and that she has some really amazing fight scenes without the help of a double. “You will really see a ‘kickass’ Erich in this film,” he said.

Likewise for Alfred Vargas who also stars in Mariposa. Somes said that Vargas prepared physically and mentally for this project, “Alfred has always been pictured as a kind and handsome corporate guy; very clean and gentlemanly. But here in Mariposa, he’ll portray a very different role; the characters here are dark, grim and gritty,” he said.

The film was set in 1994 in the gloomy side of Metro Manila. “Mariposa Sa Hawla ng Gabi” also stars Joel Torre, Mark Gil, Rez Cortes, Maria Isabel Lopez, Dennis Padilla and John Lapus who will also portray a shocking role.

“There are a lot of compelling scenes in Mariposa. Erich was very fantastic in portraying a really strong woman,” said Somes.

Watch “Mariposa Sa Hawla ng Gabi” on December 1 at 5:00 p.m., December 5 at 9:15 p.m. and December 8 at 2:30 p.m. at the Robinson’s Galleria Movie World and December 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Edsa Shang-ri La Cineplex during the 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival.

The award-winning Cinemalaya independent film, “Two Funerals” starring Tessie Tomas, Jeffrey Quizon and Xian Lim, airs on Cinema One this Sunday (August 5). The film marks Lim’s first appearance in a full-length movie.

The film depicting ‘grief as a seriously funny business’ by Cinemalaya Best Director, Gil Portes follows the life of a mother (Tomas) who searches for the body of her daughter (Princess Manzon) after getting mixed up with the corpse of a wanted man. To claim back her daughter’s body, Tomas travels with her daughter’s fiancĂ©e, Gerry (Xian Lim) from Tuguegarao, Cagayan in the north to Matnog, Sorsogon in the south, a journey to the heart of the country during Holy Week in the heat of the election season.

Xian Lim and Princess Manzon -"Two Funerals"
During their solemn journey, they encounter a series of events where the country’s societal ills are depicted. The film was praised due to its accurate description of the detestable practices in the country.

“The performances of the cast members contribute greatly to the artistic success of Two Funerals: Tessie Tomas (her portrayal of her character is very tempered and this clearly shows what a disciplined actress she is), newcomer Xian Lim, Benjie Felipe and Mon Confiado (the brains behind the money-making wake) and Althea Vega as Benjie’s sensible wife,” said Butch Francisco.

“Two Funerals was a crowd-favorite during the Cinemalaya festival. The award-winning script by Enrique Ramos was obviously well thought of. I love the juxtaposition of the holy and the irreverent, the spiritual and the mundane,” said Nel Costales, blogger. The cast was also praised for their superb acting and timing especially Lim, who was called a ‘revelation’ in the film.

The film also stars Robert Arevalo, Benjie Felipe, Mon Confiado and Princess Manzon. It also won Best Screenplay (Enrique Ramos) and Best Cinematography (Arvin Viola) in the Cinemalaya 2010 Awards night.
